Introduction
The quarries database is a point database which provides up-to-date location, permit and lease information for over 1500 quarry sites in Newfoundland and Labrador. This information includes the company, permit type, issuance and expiry dates as well as location information (UTM coordinates and NTS map sheet).

The database is divided into six sections in the Geoscience Atlas.  Under the Mineral Lands Group - Quarry Sites the sublayers consist of New Applications, Subordinate Permits, Permits, Leases, Permit Expired Last Year and Archive.  These layers includes information on active quarry permits and quarry leases as well as new applications and permits which expired last year.  The Archived Quarries layer includes permits expired the year before last as well as expired beach permits and permits not issued.  Note that these layers do not include Quarry Material Exploration Licences.

Quarry Permits are issued for up to 12 months and must be re-applied for within two months of the expiry date listed on the permit. Quarry Leases are typically issued for a period of 5 years up to a maximum of 20 years.

The Active Quarry dataset on the Geoscience Atlas is updated at midnight of each working day. The Archival dataset is updated annually.

Further information about Quarries, its Acts and Regulations, can be obtained from the Quarries website, or by contacting the project geologist in charge of the program (see Contact information below).
