INTRODUCTION

The Drill Core database is a digital catalogue of all core samples stored in the six regional Department core libraries. Core samples from over 9,000 drill holes are presently being stored in the core libraries. Most of these core samples are the product of drilling programs conducted by mineral exploration companies in the province.

The Drill Core layer, in the Geoscience Atlas, presents location data and other pertinent information on only those drill holes which have core samples stored in the core libraries.  This information is taken from assessment reports submitted to the Department by the mineral exploration companies that conducted the drilling. The attribute data includes information on the company, property and year of drilling, a link to the assessment report (Geofile), the number of boxes of core and which core library houses that core (see Table 1).  For information about drill holes with no core samples in storage please refer to the original assessment reports linked through Map Staked Claims or Historical Claims layers in the Mineral Lands group.

Further information about the core storage program can be obtained from the Drill Core Information website, or by contacting the project geologist in charge of the program (see Contact information below).

HYPERSPECTRAL SCANNING OF CORE

Information about the Hyperspectral Scanning Project is available at the College of the North Atlantic's Hyperspectral Scanning Unit website. The nCore Hyperspectral Scanning Unit has scanned hundreds of drill hole cores stored in various core storage libraries around the province. The HS-Availbl field in the Drill Core attribute table (see Table 1) indicates whether hyperspectral data is available through the college website.  Other hyperspectral data products may be available upon request. For more information, please contact  the project geologist in charge of the program (see Contact information below).

Table 1. Database attributes for the drill core database.

Variable Description
Co_No Drillhole label assigned to the drillhole by the company
Library Core storage library (see below) in which core samples are stored
Commodity Primary commodity as noted by exploration company in original report or, if not available, from commodity of MODS within 200m
HS_Availbl 'Hyperspectral VNIR-LWIR' indicates that core has been scanned (see section on Hyperspectral Scanning)
MasterNo Unique number based on combining NTS map sheet and CoreID
NTS_Map NTS 1:50,000 map sheet on which the drillhole collar is located
CoreID Unique sequential ID numbers within each NTS mapsheet
Length_m The total length of the drillhole, in metres, from surface to end of hole
UTMEast UTM Easting coordinate (m) of drillhole collar, based on NAD27
UTMNorth UTM Northing coordinate (m) of drillhole collar, based on NAD27
UTMZone UTM zone (19 to 22)
Long_NAD27 Longitude coordinate of drillhole collar, based on NAD27
Lat_NAD27 Latitude coordinate of drillhole collar, based on NAD27
Loc_Stat 'Known' or 'Approximate' location
Boxes Total number of boxes of core samples in storage for that drill hole
Dip Inclination of the drillhole axis recorded in degrees from horizontal; positive dips indicate drilling above the horizontal (e.g. in a mine)
Azimuth Direction of dip of the drillhole axis
OB_m Apparent thickness of surficial deposits between surface and bedrock at drillhole collar, recorded in metres
Year_Drill The year the drillhole was drilled
Stored_pct Amount of core sample in storage from a particular drillhole, recorded as a percentage of drillhole length from bedrock intersection to end of hole ("0" indicates unkown percent)
Company Exploration company that contracted the drilling and/or held mineral rights to the property at the time of drilling
Property Informal name applied to the mineral prospect or area in which the drillhole is located or the name of a geographical feature in close proximity to the drillhole collar
Rack Rack number of core samples in core library
CoreSize Nominal diameter of drillcore (e.g. BQ, NQ)
Geofile_No Geological Survey Geofile Number of the mineral assessment report which contains the location map and drill hole information (in Geoscience Atlas, use 'Links' to view pdf report)
Log Indicates if the drillhole log is available at the core storage facility and in the Geofiles (Y/N)
DateStored Date on which core samples were moved into the core library and added to core collection (year-month-day)
Interval_m Core sample section(s) available in core library, in metres from the hole collar
Comment Comments regarding the drill core (e.g. Approximate location from grid map)
