Bedrock Geology Help File (Legends and Symbology) |
These are the geological contacts and faults as published in:
Gower, C.F., 2010: Geology of the Grenville Province and adjacent
eastern Makkovik Province, eastern Labrador. Geological Survey, Mines
Branch, Department of Natural Resources, Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador, Map 2010-50, Open File
LAB/1575
The SE Lab Contacts data table contains one record for each segment of the polylines that define the polygon outlines.
Each record in the data table for the contact line file has the following fields:| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| MapNumber | Original map source |
| Feature | Type of contact line |
SE Lab Contacts - Feature Values:
| Contact feature code [Feature] | Description |
|---|---|
| Geologic Contact | These are unspecified contacts |
| Geo_close | Dummy line to close off polygons under lakes and where polygons were left open-ended on the source map |
| Limit of mapping | Extent of mapping |
| Neat line, original source | NTS area boundary of the source map |
The SE Lab Faults data table contains one record for each segment of a fault.
Each record in the data table for the fault line file has the following fields:| Field Name | Description |
|---|---|
| MapNumber | Original map source |
| Feature | Type of contact line |
SE Lab Faults - Features Values:
| Fault feature code [Feature] | Description |
|---|---|
| Fault, normal | Normal Fault |
| Fault, normal_thrust | Normal fault reactivating thrust |
| Fault, strike-slip | Strike-slip fault |
| Fault, thrust | Thrust fault |

Detailed Contacts - LineThe attribute table field names are: MapNumber, UNIT_LABEL, GENESIS, LITHOLOGY, GROUP, FORMATION, MEMBER refer to the published legend common to all Maps of Open file LAB/1575
MAPNUMBER refers to the individual 1:100,000 scale map in the series.
The values of RED, GREEN and BLUE may be used by MapINFO users to reproduce the published legend’s colour scheme. (See Symbology Files section below)
These are the polygon files generated from the Bedrock Geology Dataset - NFLD2616v.7.
Bedrock Geology Dataset - NFLD 2616 v.7 - User GuideFor ArcGIS users, to symbolize the Newfoundland Lines and colour the Newfoundland Polygons and 1:1 Million Bedrock Geology Polygons, please download this zip file containing the associated layer files and the geomant.ttf font file (to be loaded into c:\Windows\Fonts).
For MapInfo users, to colour the bedrock geology polygons, download
this zip file containing the AddColor.mbx program (written by L. Nolan). In MapInfo, run the program through the MapInfo
Tools section. The
Red/Green/Blue colour values are in various fields in the downloaded shape file tabular
dataset (e.g., Red, Green and Blue fields). Convert the shape file to a MapInfo file
before colourizing the polygons. Rather than the AddColor.mbx, some versions of MapInfo/Discover
contain an RGB colourizer tool in the table utilities.
For QGIS users, select ‘Style Tab’, click ‘Simple Fill’ to launch the ‘Symbol layer type’ panel.
Click the ‘expression’ button, select ‘Edit’ and apply the following expression:
color_rgb( "RED" , "GREEN" , "BLUE" ) where the text RED, GREEN and BLUE represent those fields
in the shapefile attribute table. Edit the expression with the actual field names and run the expression to fill
the polygons with the correct colours.
The symbology font
file, geomant.ttf, used to symbolize such things as point and line styles, can be obtained from
this zip file.
Lines Labrador and Polygons Labrador symbology files are provided in:
Database to Accompany Memoir 4 - Regional Geology of Eastern Labrador (Eastern Makkovik and Grenville Provinces) by C.F. Gower, 2019
Gower, C.F.2019: Regional geology of eastern Labrador (eastern Makkovik and Grenville provinces). Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey, Memoir 4, 654 pages. [Geofile LAB/1752]
The layer files are included in the zip file, downloaded from here: Download
Individual uncompiled maps are available through the Geoscience Atlas Indexes group through the 'Index - Bedrock Geology Maps' layer. Click on an NTS sheet and in the Search Results window click on 'Links' on the left side of the table in order to view and download the pdf maps. These maps are also available on the Map Indexes website. Recent maps will soon be available as vector shapefiles and older maps will be available as georeferenced tif files. Check with the Contact person to determine if a map of interest is available in shapefile or tif format.
